How much does waste carrier registration cost in England?
Checked against official sources, October 2026. This guide uses England as its example. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland differ.
On gov.uk, a new upper tier waste carrier registration costs £191.02, and renewing it every three years costs £130.25 (checked October 2026). The fee is paid to the Environment Agency.
What you pay for
The fee covers your registration as an upper tier carrier, broker or dealer for three years. You apply online on gov.uk and need your business details, who is responsible for the business, and a payment method.
Renewing
Registration lasts three years. Renewal is cheaper than a first application, but you must renew before it expires. Put the date in your diary now.
Fees change
Government fees are reviewed from time to time, so check gov.uk before you pay. Our figures are dated for that reason.
Do not pay anyone else to register you
You can register yourself directly. Be wary of sites that charge extra to do it for you.
Working outside England?
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each have their own regulator, fees and penalties. See Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, or working across borders.
